EDWIN MARKHAN, the beloved American poet, whose “Cry for Brotherhood” is published in this issue of the Jewish Daily Bulletin, speaks in the voice of the ancient Hebrew prophets of old. He also speaks as the conscience of liberty-loving America.

Markham cries out against the terrors of Nazified Germany:

“Protest this cruel wrong

In thunders of the sermon and the song.

Let cries go forth in shrill tempestuous note!

As if they rose from Tempest’s roaring throat.

Let there be thunders in the world; let be

A protest that will shake the ruler’s knee.

Let there be protest till the happy hour

When Justice shall unclothe her arm of power.

“Let there be thunders in the world–yes, more;

Let there be Brotherhood in every shore…”

This noble utterance of America’s most popular poet will resound throughout the civilized world even as his “Man With the Hoe” and his “Lincoln, the Man of the People” did. Through-out history, the prophets fought against the tyrants. And in the end, the prophets always won. The tyrants perish, while the prophets live on.

JEWISH EDUCATION

The Jewish Education Association, whose annual meeting is held Sunday, deserves the gratitude and support of the entire Jewish community of New York for the useful and constructive work it is doing. It not only aids a large number of Talmud Torahs and other Jewish schools to carry on their educational activities, but during this period of financial and moral depression, accentuated by the awful and humiliating tragedy of our people in Germany, the Jewish Education Association is constantly and properly reminding us that the problem of Jewish education is one of the most vital with which American Jewry is confronted, and that the future of American Jewry depends upon what we of this generation are doing to encourage, promote and help Jewish education in this country.

The solution of this all-important problem would directly aid the solution of many other important problems affecting Jewish life in America. It is the basis for all constructive work along communal, philanthropic, social and civic lines. The Jewish youth of America should be made familiar with the historic Jewish heritage embodied in the Hebraic moral code of brotherly love and peace and justice for all. Only thus fortified will the future generation of American Jewry be able to meet its problems intelligently and courageously, as American citizens, interested in strengthening American’s moral leadership for peace and human progress, and as American Jews interested in the fate of their people’s struggle for emancipation, liberty and equality.

Among those who have rendered most valuable services to the cause of Jewish education in New York. Bernard Semel, Israel Unterberg. Judge Otto A. Rosalsky, Magistrate Jonah J. Goldstein, Dr. David de Sola Pool and Israel S. Chipkin deserve high praise.

THE NEW ALIBI

Hitler is preparing a new alibi for May 1. New accusations are being made against the Jews of Germany that a Jewish plot to assassinate Hitler had been disclosed. Posters and newspapers in Germany are broadcasting this Jewish “conspiracy” against Hitler. Together with this “plot against Hitler” the most cruel and absurd stories of ritual murder are being disseminated in Nazi Germany.

The Hitler falsehood-apparatus is working at full speed. To deceive the German people and to conceal the economic ruin of Germany brought about by the Nazi reign of terror and stupidity, new devices of Jew-hatred are being contrived. That is done to intensify the delirium of the German people. But the new flood of falsehoods is also released at this particular moment in an effort to make the world forget the annihilating facts just made public in the second volume of the Brown Book, showing beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Hitler government has officially lied about the number of its murders committed during the first year of the Nazi reign.
