The following message despatched from Jerusalem Friday was retained by the Palestine censorship for over 27 hours.
“Latest news. Twelve Jews including a British Jew named Viner, and 7 Arabs were killed. The government supplied arms to all Britishers in Jerusalem and to a part of the Jewish self-defense corps. Several outlying Jewish quarters were attacked during the night. The famous Jewish orphan home, Diskin, was attacked. The Arabs were repelled.
“The Jerusalem police has just been informed that crowds of Arabs are proceeding to Jerusalem from Hebron and Nablus to join the local Moslems in their attack on the Jews. All shops and offices are closed.
“Engineer Neumann, a German Christian, who is working with Engineer Novomejsky in the Dead Sea project is among those seriously wounded.”
The British Colonial Office issued the following statement: “Immediate action is being taken which will enable local authorities to restore and maintain order.”
Dr. Harry S. Davidowitz of Atlantic City, N. J., was elected rabbi of the Cleveland Jewish Center at a meeting called by S. J. Bialosky, president of the Center. Rabbi Davidowitz is a graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary. He is what is termed a Conservative rabbi.
The Jewish Center of Cleveland has become widely known for the controversy among its members as to whether it is to remain Orthodox as its original constitution provided, or adopt the so-called Conservative ritual.
Dr. Davidowitz will take up his duties in Cleveland before the High Holidays.
