The Oakland Board of Education has denied permission to the Gideon Society to distribute Gideon Bibles in the public schools of this city. The society’s request for permission had been opposed by the Jewish Community Relations Council and other Oakland groups on the grounds that distribution of the Bibles would violate the traditional separation of church and state.
