A bill that would provide United States technical and financial assistance to Israel in the construction of a nuclear-powered water desalination plant has been introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman James C. Corman, California Democrat. The envisaged plant would be capable of producing up to 150 million gallons of fresh water and 400,000 kilowatts of electricity daily.
Congressman Corman said that the U.S. Department of Interior as been assisting Israel since 1964 in a study to determine the feasibility of the project. He said that while the study was still incomplete, “indications are that there is considerable promise and a great need for a large scale nuclear desalting plant in Israel by 1975.”
