Police today closed the Palestine Office here when thousands of Jews stormed it in the hope of obtaining visas to enable them to proceed to Palestine.
Scenes of violence took place in front of the office when the large crowd of applicants were told that the Palestine Office had a few hundred visas for its disposition. The office is composed of representatives of various Zionist groups and is working under instructions from the Executive of the Jewish Agency in Palestine.
POLICE SETS VISA LIMIT
In order to avoid further disturbances the police authorities ordered the Palestine Office not to accept more than fifty applications for visas daily. This the authorities believe, will prevent the congregation of large crowds, similar to today’s, at the premises of the office.
Closing of the office was only a temporary measure, the police explained. The office will be reopened next week.
Yesterday’s outbreak was one of a series which have occurred in several cities in Greece during the last few weeks.
Anxious to proceed to Palestine because of their impoverished condition, Jews are besieging the Palestine offices in every city begging for immigration certificates.
