A documentation center for gathering, filing and indexing of information and data about the fate of more than 160, 000 Austrian Jews killed or deported during World War II by the Nazi regime will be opened here September 1, according to an announcement today by the Federal Organization of Austrian Jewish Communities.
The center will be headed by Simon Wiesenthal, one of the men known to have been active in the long search for Adolf Eichmann, the Gestapo specialist in the annihilation of Jews who was finally captured in Argentina and brought to trial in Israel.
It is known that about 60, 000 of Austria’s Jews were murdered during the Nazi regime. One hundred thousand more emigrated, but exact documentation about the fate of these emigres has not yet been organized.
