Official aliya figures for 1977 published by the Jewish Agency show an overall increase of 8.6% over 1976, from 19,754 to 21,456. Soviet aliya was up by 14%, from 7279 in 1976 to 8351 in 1977. North American aliya was down 2% and Western European aliya was up 2.6%. In both cases the number annually was just below 3000. Argentina provided over one-third of South American olim, with 2158 olim in 1977, a 33% increase over 1976. South African. olim increased from 584 in 1976 to 1492 in 1977. The Vienna dropout rate was a steady 50%, with minor fluctuations, throughout 1977.
