Official campaigning in Israel ended a day before the nation goes to the voting booth to select a prime minister. Prime Minister Ehud Barak still trailed opposition leader Ariel Sharon by nearly 20 points in opinion polls. An Israeli soldier was killed in the Gaza Strip by a single bullet while he was traveling near a Palestinian refugee camp, according to a spokesman for the Israeli army. Israel closed the Gaza airport and the Gaza-Egypt border following the slaying.
