Fantastic anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist charges made yesterday by the Minister of Religions against the Jewish community in Serres, Macedonia, were today sharply repudiated by the prefect of the district and the commander of the military garrison.
Both officials issued the following statement to a delegation of leading Jews:
“We are astonished by these fantastic accusations and deplore the false indictment against the Jews of the district.”
REPORTED FLAG INSULT
The Minister of Religion issued a report in which he alleged that the Jews of Serres had insulted the Greek people and flag at a memorial meeting held there in August on the anniversary of Dr. Theodor Herzl.
The prefect of Serres, following the visit paid him today by the Jewish delegation, ordered the chief of police to suppress at once any manifestation of anti-Jewish feeling.
