Israeli officials are declining to confirm press reports yesterday that Israeli tankers have been proceeding down the gulf of Suez toward Eilat carrying oil from Sinai oil fields about 100,000 barrels a day. Although Egypt is officially irate over this, she was said to favor not doing anything about it because of what an Egyptian official called a “mutual deterrent”–the Israeli tankers have been allowed to use the gulf in return for no Israeli attacks on Ras Shukair, location of a major Egyptian oil field. Ras Shukair is an active, multi-million-dollar business-and-leisure center with tanks capable of holding 3 million barrels of oil. Its three offshore loading sites are made use of by many nations, including the Soviet Union.
