All private employment agencies in Ohio have received a warning from the State Department of Commerce against discrimination in processing job applicants, it was disclosed today, following announcement of a survey by the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith of agencies in the Youngstown-Warren area showing such bias. The memorandum from Lloyd T. Lindsley, chief of the division of licensing of the state department, cited provisions of the State law and said that reports of such discrimination would be investigated “and appropriate action taken if it is found that the law is being violated.”
Willard P. Dudley, administrator of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, sent a letter to all bureau employees reminding them not to accept any work orders which “refer to race, color or creed.” He indicated one employee had been suspended for accepting a suspected biased order. The Youngstown Fair Employment Practices Committee, which cooperated with the ADL in the study, is reviewing the findings for possible action, according to Dr. Sidney M. Berkowitz, FEPC chairman.
