Energy Minister Yitzhak Modai denied a report today that Israel has discovered oil shale in the Negev capable of meeting the country’s energy needs for the next 10 years. A front page story in Maariv yesterday made this claim, saying that large deposits of shale had been found near Arab in the northern Negev. Modai said that while there were deposits in the Negev the process of converting it to oil was expensive. He said it was not yet known whether such a project would be commercially feasible.
