One Israeli Arab was dead, and one wounded as a result of a clash with the police today in an Arab village. Thirteen policemen, including an officer, were reported injured and received treatment in a hospital. Curfew was immediately imposed upon the village and steel-helmeted police are now patrolling the streets there.
The village, Shafer Amy is located on the Haifa-Safad road. Village workers, protesting that a local bus company provides insufficient buses in the morning rush hours to take them to work to Haifa, erected roadblocks and stoned the approaching buses. When police arrived, they were forced to retreat under showers of stones from the villagers.
A larger police unit was similarly unable to disperse the crowd and was compelled to fire warning shots. Larger reinforcements later succeeded in entering the village after further warning shots. Upon entering the village the police found two villagers wounded from ricocheted bullets. One of them died later in a hospital.
