One of the chief defendants in the forthcoming trial of former Nazi officials responsible for Hitler’s euthanasia program, Dr. Gerhard Bohne, was reported today to have disappeared from his home here. He had been released from pre-trial custody because of poor health.
Dr, Bohne is charged with having participated in the killing of 15,000 patients hospitalized during World War II in German clinics and asylums. The 61-year-old lawyer was believed in Bonn to have fled abroad with the help of friends, to escape trial. He was to stand trial in Limburg with Dr. Werner Heyde, who is accused of murdering more than 100,000 mentally ill persons and concentration camp inmates.
Last March, Dr. Bohne was released from prison where he had been held with Heyde for three-and-a-half years, but was required to turn in his passport and report to police daily. The last time he reported was in late July.
