One terrorist was killed and several others were routed in a clash with an Israel Defense Force patrol in the southern Lebanon security zone Wednesday night.
The dead man, wearing a military uniform, was identified as a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a terrorist group headed by Nayef Hawatmeh.
He and two or three companions apparently were attempting to penetrate the Israel border when they were spotted by the IDF patrol near Markabe village, less than three miles north of Kibbutz Margaliyot in Israel.
The area where they were shot is considered in IDF circles as a “free-fire” zone, where IDF soldiers can “shoot anything that moves.”
A Kalachnikov assault rifle, a LAW missile and a large quantity of explosives were found near the slain terrorist. The others apparently escaped.
