Only 96 German, Austrian, Rumanian, Bulgarian and Hungarian Jews now residing in Palestine have applied for repatriation to an UNRRA commission which is now in Palestine, it was reported here today. UNRRA officials, however, have made no commitment to date concerning the possibilities of repatriation.
On May 23 Reuters reported that Austrian Minister of the Interior Oscar Halmer had announced that 2,000 Austrian Jews who settled in Palestine after the “Anschluss” have applied for permission to return to Austria.
(The Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent in Prague reported today that two Czech Jews who recently returned there from Palestine were among 16 emigrants who left for France on route to the Holy Land.)
The cornerstone of Givath Washington, an Orthodox children’s colony named after George Washington, was laid here yesterday, with Rabbi Zemach Green of Washington, D.C. officiating. Rabbi Green was active in raising funds for establishment of the colony. Placed in the cornerstone were stones from the White House, the Capitol in Washington and Mount Vernon, the first President’s ancestral home. They were brought here through the efforts of U.S. Consul-General, Lowell C. Pinkerton.
