Only about 1,000,000 of Europe’s 11,000,000 Jews nos live in countries where there is a free economic system, Dr. David Lvovitch, vice-president of the World ORT Union, Jewish vocational retraining organization, asserts in an editorial in the July-October issue of the ORT Economic Bulletin. He says that some 5,700,000 Jews now live in Russia or Russian-occupied areas and 4,000,000 in Nazi-controlled countries.
A detailed picture of the sufferings of Jews in Germany is given by Rabbi Max Nussbaum, formerly of Berlin. “The continued survival of thousands of Jews in Germany cannot be denoted by the term ‘life'” he says. “For this word implies certain intellectual and spiritual values…which are wholly lacking to German Jewry today.”
