Dr. Matthew T. Mellon, nephew of former Secretary of the Treasury Andrew J. Mellon, today explained that he was merely thinking of the student when he offered the Harvard Corporation a scholarship to replace the rejected offer of Dr. Ernst F. S. Hanfstaengl.
“The real loser,” Dr. Mellon, who is enrolled at the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, said, “seems to be the student.”
Mellon emphatically denied that he is a Nazi or a “Nazi agent.” He also denied that he tried to make the Harvard Corporation retract or recant the ideals expressed in rejecting the Hanfstaengl offer.
