The first performance in America of an opera in Hebrew, “The Pioneers,” by Professor Jacob Weinberg, head of the department of composition, New York College of Music, will take place on November 25, 27 and 29 in Mecca Temple. Excerpts from this opera have been heard at concerts of Professor Weinberg’s music in Town Hall. These and other excerpts will be performed in Washington before the Hadassah national convention.
The forthcoming production has been prepared under the direction of Enzo dell’ Orefice. The chorus of fifty and an orchestra of sixty musicians will be conducted by Michael Feveisky.
The story of the opera is founded on a drama of Jewish immigrants who leave their homes in Eastern Europe and journey to Palestine. Much of the music affects the style of the Hebrew ritual.
