The aid of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations has been elicited in the agitation that is now going on in the Province of British Columbia to prevent the introduction of the teaching of the Bible in the public-school. Mr. Landsberg of Victoria has been in correspondence with Mr. Charles Shohl, president of the Union, in which he asks for information which would help the Jews of Canada to fight the proposed practise. A resolution was passed at a recent convention of Trustees of the public-school in the province urging the inclusion of Bible teaching in the curriculum. Material furnished by the Union enabled Mr. Landsberg to convince the Minister of Education of the Province as well as members of the Provincial Legislature who have this matter in charge, to withhold the passage of the law which would make Bible reading in the schools compulsory. One of the Trustees of the public school, Christian Sivertz, has already introduced a resolution attacking Bible reading in the schools on the grounds that this would be contrary to the provision of the School Act, that the school shall be non-sectarian. This resolution will come up for discussion at a later meeting.
