A census of the entire Jewish population in this city, the first Jewish census in the history of Greece, was ordered today by the Executive of the Salonica Jewish Community
The number of Jews in Salonica was at one time estimated at more than 100,000. Now it is estimated at about 60,000. The census will for the first time establish the exact figure.
SMUGGLERS SEIZED
Three Greek citizens were arrested in Czechoslovakia for offering to take Jews into Palestine illegally, according to official information received here today by the Foreign Office.
Those arrested were detained in Munkacz, where they were trying to assure local Jews that they would bring them into Palestine without British visas or regular passports, in return for 3,000 kronen from each would-be emigrant.
The authorities in Czechoslovakia are now making inquiries into their origin. It is believed that the three are a part of the gang which took several hundred youths from Poland last Autumn on the Greek steamer Velos which, after failing to land them in Palestine, wandered on the high seas for many months without being permitted to land anywhere.
