Approval of ordination of women as rabbis was urged here today at the biennial assembly of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, the major women’s organization of Reform Judaism meeting in conjunction with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.

Calling on the sisterhoods to work towards the adoption of a definite resolution on ordination of women at their next assembly in 1963, Jane Evans, executive director of the federation, said: “The time has now come for the sisterhoods to take a definite stand on asking Reform seminaries to ordain women as rabbis when they are properly qualified and upon completion of the identical course of study with men.”

Asserting that she realized that ordination of women could be “unacceptable” to Conservative and Orthodox groups, Miss Evans said she hoped that the Reform branch would express its “liberal spirit” by granting full equality to women.
