The sadness of the Jewish community over Gen. Eisenhower’s death at 78 was expressed in statements issued by the major Jewish organizations. All of them focused on Gen. Eisenhower’s role as commander of the Allied armies who liberated Europe from Nazism and on the compassion and understanding he showed the survivors of the holocaust. “Having seen the fruits of bigotry in the liberated death camps of Nazi Europe, he dedicated his life to the struggle against injustice, persecution and slavery,” one statement read. One American Zionist leader declared, “His friendly intercession in behalf of the survivors of the holocaust, and his cooperation with many of the refugees in their desire to emigrate to Palestine, contributed to the upbuilding of what is now Israel.”
