Max A. Braude, director general of the World ORT Union, arrived from Geneva, Switzerland today to participate in discussions for support of American Jewry to the international vocational program which he heads.
Mr. Braude announced that a new training program will open its first courses this week in Poland. Jewish repatriates from the USSR will comprise the student body. Pre-apprenticeship classes are to begin soon for pupils in Jewish schools in Poland, said Mr. Braude. ORT activities in Poland had been discontinued in 1950.
The new Polish program, together with heightened needs in Israel will bring the ORT budget for 1958 over $5,000,000, Mr. Braude declared. Negotiations between ORT and the Joint Distribution Committee are expected to get underway in the next several days, he stated. During the present year, the JDC provided $1, 500,000 out of United Jewish Appeal funds, toward an ORT budget of $4,500,000.
