U.S. Ambassador Edward B. Lawson has launched a new venture in technical assistance with the signing of an agreement by which ORT in Israel is to translate into Hebrew American and other books on industrial and trade subjects.
The project, which is to be completed by mid-1960, will make available in Hebrew for the first time an extensive literature of workshop and trade manuals and textbooks. The publications are intended for use by teachers and students in vocational schools in Israel. The books will also be available to artisans and mechanics who will thus be introduced to American industrial methods and practices.
Ambassador Lawson presented a check to Jacob S. Shapiro, president of ORT in Israel, as first payment on a grant that will total 100,000 Israeli pounds over the two-year period. The technical literature translation project is part of the American Special Cultural Program for Israel. An advisory committee, composed of representatives of Israeli organizations and relevant government departments, will participate in selection of titles. The U.S. Information Service of the American Embassy will also be represented.
