An intensive program of vocational retraining for young Hungarian Jews has been launched in Hungary by a committee of 60 prominent Jews under the leadership of Dr. Imre Szekely, outstanding industrialist and Chief Councillor of State, it was announced here today by the World ORT Federation.
Under the direction of technical, pedagogical, agricultural and economic subcommittees, there have already been established a number of training workshops for boys and girls in Budapest and in the sub-Carpathian areas, the poorest province in the country. Courses in engineering, nursing, dressmaking, farming, glass blowing, tailoring, weaving, domestic work and others have either already been started or will be instituted in the near future.
The ORT committee, organized to cope with the disastrous effects of the anti-Jewish legislation, includes among its officers Dr. Ernest Boda, Chief Councillor of State; Dr. Bela Alapi, former director of the City Savings Bank in Budapest, and Dr. Adolf Deutsch, director of education for the Budapest Orthodox Congregation. Members include Baron and Baroness Alfons Weiss and other outstanding members of Hungarian Jewry.
