The World Ort Union reported today there was an urgent need for large apprenticeship centers in Israel’s principal urban areas if the country’s manpower resources were to be made adequate to meet the current rate of industrial expansion in Israel.
Ort trains more than 10,000 students in a chain of schools in Israel. The report said that extensive construction activities being carried out in various parts of Israel “have begun to suffer from a shortage of skilled workers, and the pace of industrial development may be slowed down as the shortage of labor becomes more acute.”
The number of skilled workers among newcomers “is not enough” to supply industrial labor requirements in a period of transition from an agricultural to an industrial economy, the report said. The report emphasized that the industrial requirements and demands for skills were so great in Israel that the vocational training programs now being carried out by public bodies and Ort “does not meet the essential demands in the fields of training the needed skilled manpower.”
