Orthodox legislators in Israel threatened to leave the governing coalition if non-Orthodox representatives are appointed to local religious councils. The threat came after the High Court of Justice ordered the religious affairs minister, a portfolio currently held by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to immediately appoint Reform and Conservative representatives to the local religious councils of Jerusalem and Kiryat Tivon.
