At “symbolic commencement exercises” to be held tomorrow night at Temple Emanu-El, 1 East Sixty-fifth street, degrees and diplomas denied Jewish students in Germany will be conferred “in absentia.” In the presence of more than 2,000 young men and women and several distinguished exiles from the Third Reich, Professor Emil Lederer, dean of the Graduate Faculty of the University in Exile, will present the degrees.
The faculty is associated with the New School for Social Research. Full commencement ceremonies will honor those whose academic careers were abruptly suspended by the “Aryan” legislation and who would otherwise have been graduated from German universities this summer. A number of fraternities, sororities, youth organizations and others are sponsoring the event.
Dr. Samuel H. Goldenson, rabbi of Temple Emanu-El will deliver the “baccalaureate sermon.” Other speakers will include Louis Lipsky. Dr. Henry Moskowitz and Rabbi Ralph A. Habas. The exercises will mark the opening of the drive of New York Jewish youth on behalf of Jewish youth in Germany, under the auspices of the Greater New York Junior Division of the United Jewish Appeal. Co-chairmen of the campaign are Carlos F. Israels and Miss Leona J. Herrmann.
