As of October lst, 55, 767 Jewish officers and men of the Red Army had been decorated for heroism in battle, it was announced here today. Jews rank fourth in the total of decorations awarded men of the various nationalities serving in the Russian forces.
At the same time, it was announced that Major-General Samuel Shapiro, chief of the engineering troops of the Red Army, has been awarded the Order of Suvorov, Second Class, for his success in forcing the crossing of the Vistula River in Poland. Gen. Shapiro already holds four high decorations. He has played an active part in the operations in Poland and the Ukraine since the onset of the Russian drive.
Another Jewish general, Matvei Weindraub, has also been decorated for assisting in the forcing of the Vistula. Gen. Weindraub was awarded the Order of Kutusov, Second Class. He holds three other decorations and has been mentioned in an order-of-the-day issued by Marshal Stalin. Gen. Weindraub, who is only 35 years old, was born in Minak.
