The amount of 500,000 roubles was added to the funds of the Ozet, society for settling Jews on the land, from the proceeds of a lottery conducted by the society.
The conclusion of the lottery was celebrated at a mass meeting at the Jewish state theatre, where addresses were delivered by Sholom Asch and Soviet Health Commissioner Semashko. The Health Commissioner stated that “We cannot sleep calmly in the face of the Jewish poverty until all are provided with productive employment on the land and in the factories.”
Over 2,000 persons were winners In the lottery.
