Palestine Chief Rabbi Sends Urgent Appeal for Aid As Bitter Fighting Continues; Jewish Leaders to Me

Rabbi A. J. Kook, Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Palestine, requested the office of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency here late Tuesday evening to transmit to the press of the world, to all rabbis and prominent Jews throughout the world, the following appeal:

“All Palestine Jewry is in danger. Save us, please, as quickly as possible, by all available ways. God help us.”

Rabbi Kook stated tonight that he received a cable from Dr. Joseph H. Hertz, Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, who declared that he had taken “all measures possible,” and urged Palestine Jewry to “be courageous.”

Among the four Jews killed today in the colony Kastinia, there is Dr. Israelie, a member of the Hadassah medical staff, two Jewish members of the police force; also 4 Arabs. The police defended the colony during 32 hours of attack.

ARABS SUSTAIN HEAVY LOSSES IN THE ATTACK ON CHULDAH

The fifty pioneers in the Jewish National Fund colony Chuldah, in the Judean hills, established in 1909, offered strong resistance to the Arab attack, which lasted for many hours and resulted in heavy losses. While the pioneers suffered only 1 casualty, Ephraim Tchizek being killed, 41 corpses of Arabs were found near and within the colony when the attack was repulsed. The surviving pioneers evacuated the colony, fleeing to Tel Aviv. Also the setlers of Hartuv, in the Judean hills, founded by Bulgarian Jews in 1896, and Kastinia, fled to Tel Aviv.

The colony Hittin, maintained by the Orthodox Zionist Organization, Mizrachi, was attacked. The assailants were repelled. The American consul was called upon to rush aid to the children’s village Meir Shfey, which is maintained by the Junior Hadassah, American young women’s Zionist organization.
