First official figures on trade since current Arab disorders broke out last April 19 show that the economic life of Palestine has been severely hit by the disturbances.
Imports of merchandise in April amounted to about $5,300,000 as compared with $7,100,000 the same month last year and $6,350,000 in April of 1934. The decrease was about 25 per cent under 1935 and about 16 per cent under 1934.
April exports totalled $600,000, a drop of approximately 80 per cent from the $3,000,000 export figure for the same month last year, and about 75 per cent under the $2,300,000 exports of April, 1934.
The figures cover imports and exports for the first four months of the year. In virtually every category, trade for the four months was below last year’s figures, largely as a result of partial paralysis of commerce brought on by the disorders.
