Anxious anticipations concerning the proposed income tax that the Palestine government is reported to be ready to put into effect are premature, but nevertheless are not unfounded. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learns that the government is contemplating a tax of from 2.5 per cent to 5 per cent with incomes below $1,500 exempt.
The government is also planning a unified land tax to replace the tithe which will be reduced from 10 per cent to 7.5 per cent. When the rumors of an income tax first became current several weeks ago, the Palestine industrialists held protest meetings and adopted resolutions condemning such a tax.
