In one of the first concrete preliminaries to British withdrawal from Palestine, Chief Secretary Sir Henry L. Gurney has ordered rigorous economies involving the dismissal of temporary government officials and the halting of purchases by government departments, it was reported here today. No new projects are to be initiated and all expenditures are to be reduced to a minimum, seven if these moves lessen the efficiency of the departments concerned.
A questionnaire regarding evacuation will be circulated soon among all British officials. It has already been distributed to British members of the police force. The ouestionnaire asks the officials about their future plans and wishes and makes reference to possible employment in England and British-controlled territories. However, there is no indication as to the date of withdrawal.
