The Palestine Government has cabled authorization to the British minister in Sofia to place 50 new immigration certificates at the disposal of the Palestine Office there for “urgent cases” from Bulgaria and Rumania, it was announced today.
More than 300 Jewish immigration from Lithuania, Rumania and the Balkans arrived here during the last week in February, it was stated.
At the same time, Moshe Chelouche, Bulgarian consul in Tel Aviv, announced his resignation in a cable to Foreign Minister I. Popoff. Chelouche had submitted his resignation when the Bulgarian anti-Jewish law was announced, but was persuaded by the Sofia authorities to withdraw it. He announced his final resignation after the German occupation of Bulgaria.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the sinking of the refugee ship Patria last November reached 182 today with the announcement that 12 more bodies had been recovered.
