Great disappointment has been aroused here and in Safed as a result of the first compensation payments to Jews for property and personal losses suffered as a result of last Summer’s riots. Most of the payments thus far made total eight percent of the damages suffered but in some cases the payment is even less.
The family of Rabbi Hassoun, whose house in Hebron was destroyed and looted with property damage totaling $15,000 has received fifty-seven dollars in compensation. The Jewish community of Hebron, which claimed $10,000 for the destruction of a synagogue, asylum and other communal institutions, has been paid $270. Asher Karlinsky, who suffered damages of $515 when his house in Hebron was looted, received three dollars and fifty cents.
Resolutions protesting against “the shameful attitude of the government towards the riot sufferers” were adopted last night at a meeting of Jews in Safed. It was pointed out that the government had estimated the damages at a low figure to start with but nevertheless it was now paying but one-third of its own estimates. Late in March the government announced that an appropriation of $500,000 had been set aside as compensation.
