A comprehensive report on Palestine’s situation in connection with the renewed drive of the Axis armies on the Egyptian front was given here today by Isaac Ben-Zvi, president of the Jewish National Council, addressing a plenary session of the Council.
At the same time the official Gazette announced today the establishment of a new defense corps for the performance of essential services in the event of emergencies in Palestine. The High Commissioner of Palestine has the right to call any person for service in this corps. He also has sole authority to prescribe the duration of this service.
RECRUITMENT OF PALESTINE JEWS FOR NAVY SUSPENDED
There will be no further recruitment of Palestinians for the British Navy, it was learned here following the return to Palestine this week of Moshe Shertok, head of the political department of the Jewish Agency, from conferences with British military and naval authorities in Cairo.
More than 1,250 Jews enlisted in the British armed forces during the month of August, it was announced here today. They include 250 women who enlisted in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. A number of war veterans who fought in the ranks of the Jewish Legion in World War I are also among the 1,250, including the composer Shalom Aharoni who served in the Jewish Legion under Vladimir Jabotinsky.
