Palestine Jews Speed Enlistments; 90 Refugees Arrive from Yugoslavia

A Jewish Soldiers’ Day, aimed at obtaining funds for the troops’ Comfort Fund and speeding up enlistments, was inaugurated tonight.

Isaac Ben-Zvi, chairman of the Vaad Leumi (Jewish National Council), broadcast an appeal for support of Jewish members of the armed forces, while Moshe Shertok, Dr. L. Altman and Dr. Bardt of the Mizrachi addressed mass meetings in Tel Aviv.

Jewish soldiers will parade tomorrow in Haifa and Tel Aviv. All Hebrew newspapers are publishing editorials on the subject. Central committees of various students’ organizations, sports bodies and other youth groups are appealing for speedy enlistment.

Meanwhile, 90 Jewish children from Yugoslavia, brought here under the auspices of the Youth Aliyah, arrived today by the overland route, having traveled through Turkey and Syria.

Jewish immigration for March totalled 826 and for the first quarter of 1941, 1,470 including 448 in the capitalist category.

A delegation of Sephardic Jews formerly of Greece appealed to Moshe Shertok, head of the Jewish Agency’s political department, for immigration certificates for Zionist leaders in Salonika and other parts of Greece.

Five hundred Jewish refugees from Wilno trapped at Vladivostok, Russia, have been refused entry by Japan and the Soviet authorities have refused to prolong their sojourn permits, threatening to place them in a concentration camp at Archangel, it was learned here today.

The refugees have cabled relatives in Tel Aviv appealing urgently for visas.
