Demands for protective tariffs for Palestinian industry were voiced yesterday by a conference of manufacturers here, which discussed obstacles to manufacturing in the Holy Land.
Speakers pointed out that Syria was selling heavily in Palestine, but buying very little of the Holy Land’s goods.
Kingsley W. Stead, Director of Customs, defending the Government’s policy, said the authorities were favoring the development of industry and declared that manufacturing would develop slowly but surely.
Ari Shenkar, president of the Palestine Manufacturers’ Association, who was chairman, paid tribute to Jews who have fallen in recent disorders and eulogized Meier Dizengoff, late mayor of Tel Aviv, and Nahum Sokolow, late English Zionist leader.
Among the other speakers were Israel Rokach, acting mayor of Tel Aviv, and Eliezer Kaplan, treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.
