The death of Brig. Gen. Sir Gilbert Clayton, British High Commissioner of Iraq, caused grief in Palestine. The Hebrew press devoted space to eulogies to the former Palestine Chief Secretary.
The “Ha’Aretz” declared in an editorial: “No such Chief Secretary since Sir Wyndham Deeds showed such understanding and sympathy for the just demands of all sections of the population, appreciating the great constructive value of Zionism.” The “Davar” recalled Sir Gilbert’s favorable attitude toward the Yishub.
