More than 1,000 workers of the Palestine Potash Col, one of the largest industrial enterprises in the country, went out on strike today as a result of the company’s refusal to grant their demands for an increase in the basic wage rate, better housing and improved working conditions.

The Palestine Government’s Wage Committee, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice, today published its preliminary findings, recommending substantial increases in the basic wage rates. Revealing that the price index now stands at 215, the committee recommended a 100% increase for workers earning between $42 and $55 monthly plus additional increases depending on the price index at the moment and the number of dependents in the worker’s family.
