The Holy Land was quiet today for the first time since the Arab disorders broke out almost six months ago, reports from all parts of the country indicated.
Two high officers of Lieut. Gen. J.G. Dill’s staff had their baptism of Arab fire last night when a rebel band ambushed a patrol of Sea-forth Highlanders escorting them on an inspection tour along the Acro-Safed road.
The officers were Brig. Gen. Beauman, commander of the Fifteenth Infantry Brigade, and Maj. Gen. Howard, commander of the Fifth Infantry Division.
Planes reconnoitering ahead of the party had failed to spot the rebels. When the officers’ party came up, the Arabs poured fire into the patrol from hills flanking the road. After a brief skirmish, the Arabs were routed by the troops. A number of casualties were believed to have been inflicted on the rebels. The soldiers escaped unscathed.
High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope this morning visited refugee camps in Tel Aviv. Informally addressing groups of refugees, Sir Arthur expressed sorrow at their sufferings and voiced the hope that they would soon cease.
