Palestinian legislators became embroiled in a melee with Israeli police over the construction of tin shacks by a nationalist Orthodox group in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City. An Israeli court issued a temporary stop work order, and Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert said the shacks would be torn down. The Orthodox group Ateret Cohanim, which has been setting up Jewish compounds in eastern Jerusalem, increased its activities after a yeshiva student was recently stabbed on his way to morning prayers at the Western Wall.
