The Government of Paraguay, responding to an appeal of the Hias-Ica Emigration Association, agreed to permit the free entry of Jewish refugees from Europe without limiting the number involved, it was announced today by Max Gottschalk, president of the Association.
The announcement said that president Medina Angarita of Venezuela has similarly authorized the Venezuelan Government to issue instructions to its legations in Europe to grant visas to Jewish refugees regardless of the age of the applicant.
The Government of Ecuador, too, has agreed in principle to grant visas for 500 Jewish refugee children and is preparing a special decree regarding the establishment of “free ports” in the country, the Hias-Ica announcement stated.
The steps of these governments came as result of an appeal sent out by the Board of Directors of the Hias-Ica to all its affiliated committees in South America asking them to urgently approach their respective government requesting all possible facilities for admission of persecuted Jews and especially the granting of a maximum number of visas for children and the creation of free ports for adults following the example of the United States, Canada and Mexico.
