The fact that the late Lord Balfour had fought for the admission of Jews into the British Parliament was recalled here last night by Senator Justin Godard, speaking at a Balfour memorial meeting. Amid a tremendous ovation, Senator Godard read Prime Minister MacDonald’s statement on Palestine and declared that thus “Balfour’s idea lives.”
A representative of the British embassy expressed gratitude for the way in which the Jews honor the memory of Lord Balfour. Former minister of justice, Moreau Giaferri, recalled that France was the first nation to recognize the Balfour Declaration. Professor Victor Basch spoke of Lord Balfour as inspired by the Bible. Ferdinand Corcos and advocate Mirtil, president of the Zionist Organization, also spoke. A letter was received from M. Painleve.
