Mayor Abraham Beame signed a bill Tuesday changing the name of Seaside Park in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn to Asser Levy Seaside Park. Levy was the first Jew to secure his rights of citizenship in Dutch New Amsterdam on April 21, 1657.
Murray, Tates, founder of the Asser Levy National Council and a historian for the Kings County Jewish War Veterans died of cancer on Dec. 3 and never lived to see his dream to honor Levy come true in Brighton Beach. The JWV is planning to hold a ceremony in April at the Asser Levy Seaside Park to officially dedicate the new name.
Alex Novitsky, WEVD radio executive, said he helped Tates to have the City Council adopt a bill to change the name of the park. Novitsky plans to write and produce a radio and television program about the event.
