Despite the plea of kosher butchers of this city for a city ordinance regulating opening and closing hours, the board of commissioners has refused to act.
The only objector among the butchers was Harry Jaffe, who opens on Sundays at 10 A.M. instead of at 1 P.M. as at present.
Ephraim Schwartz, representing the butchers, declared they now work from 6 A.M. until midnight.
Although there is talk of a state kosher butchers’ code, Schwartz declared there is doubt of its passage since the non-Jewish and kosher butchers can not agree on the Saturday closings and the Sunday openings of the latter group.
Mayor Johnson ended the discussion by declaring himself in favor of a code to be drawn up among the butchers without city interference. The board concurred.
