The Chicago Election Board rejected today proposals offered by a committee of Orthodox Jewish groups for proxy or absentee voting of their ballots in the illinois state primary April 12, the first day of Passover.
The committee met with Sidney T. Holzman, chairman of the election board and told him that as many as 125, 000 Jews would be unable to vote in the primary. The committee asked that precinct officials be allowed to cast votes for Orthodox Jews under regulations permitting such help to physically incapacitated persons or that Orthodox Jews be permitted to cast absentee ballots on another day. Mr. Holzman said he could not permit this under the Illinois constitution.
