In the presence of a distinguished gathering of leaders in religious, civic and business life, the degree of Doctor of Hebrew Letters, honors cause, was conferred upon Paul Baerwald, Honorary Chairman of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, at the Fall Convocation of the Hebrew Union College today in the Beth-El Chapel of Temple Emanu-El, New York City. The honorary degree was awarded to Mr. Baerwald by Dr. Julian Morgenstern, President of Hebrew union College.
In conferring the honorary degree, Dr. Morgenstern read a citation stating that this tribute was accorded to Mr. Baerwald “in recognition of long, self-sacrificing and distinguished service to his brethren of the household of Israel, of devoted and untiring labors, through almost half a century, to relieve the needy, suffering and oppressed, to provide food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, refuge for the persecuted, hope for the despairing and opportunity for the underprivileged and dispossessed.
“The son of noble parents and heir to a precious Jewish family tradition,” the citation continued, “he has lived consistently a life which exemplifies the highest teachings of Judaism. His leadership, modest, wise and statesmanlike, and animated by a far-reaching vision of world peace and human brotherhood, has brought salvation for uncounted children of his people and brought illumination, guidance and faith to his fellowmen. Through him Judaism has been strengthened, Israel has been blessed, the world has become better, more beautiful and happier.”
Speakers at the Convocation and participants in the religious services and academic ceremony were Rabbi Jonah B. Wise of the Central Synagogue; Rabbi Samual H. Goldenson of Temple Emanu-El; Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federation of Jewish Charities of Greater New York; Rabbi William F. Rosenblum of Temple Israel, New York City; Rabbi Nathan Stern of the West End Synagogue, New York City, President of the Hebrew Union College Alumni Association; Relph W. Mack of Cincinnati, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the College; and Adolph Rosenberg of Cincinnati, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Union of American Hebrew congregations.
